BATON ROUGE, LA: Today the Fair Fight Initiative (FFI) announced a major initiative to coordinate free legal assistance to defend a woman’s right to protect her body from forced birth. We will not accept the lethal war on women our Supreme Court declared in Dobbs. Now is the time to fight. Immediately upon this unconstitutional, illegitimate decision being handed down, Louisiana’s “trigger” laws came into effect, mandating 10-15 years of imprisonment to anyone who assists or provides in a woman’s right to choose. Attorney General Jeff Landry has made it clear he fully intends to enforce this law, even in cities that do not agree with it—like New Orleans. We do not accept this.
Louisiana’s law makes no exceptions even for rape or incest. If a father rapes his 11 year-old daughter, our Supreme Court and the Louisiana legislature have said she must carry that child to term. Further, this decision of course impacts poor people, including disproportionately people of color, the worst. Those with means can travel to Illinois or New Mexico to ensure autonomy over their body. Those who cannot afford this travel, to miss work, to pay for childcare, and all the other expenses—these women no longer have equal rights. This situation is morally abhorrent. We believe in reproductive freedom and equal rights for all people.
The Fair Fight Initiative will represent any and everyone charged with an abortion related offense for free. Be it a person seeking an abortion, or someone charged with helping to provide and ensure the right to health care. We will litigate against this oppressive law and the Supreme Court’s illegitimate decision. We will fight to again make abortion safe and legal.
We ask anyone seeking representation to contact us. Ronald Haley and Ashley Greenhouse from the Haley Law Firm, Christopher Murell from Murell Law, and David Utter and William Claiborne from the Claiborne Law Firm are all working together in the Fair Fight Initiative. Anyone can contact any of us, and all of us will immediately be involved in their representation.
Our highest court has shown they no longer have legitimacy. Our legislature and attorney general seek to punish individual rights for women. We stand ready for this fight and will not back down.
